Science, Art, & Physical Education

Science focus on fostering a strong foundation in scientific inquiry and knowledge. Students will engage in hands-on investigations and develop skills across various scientific disciplines.  

Students will learn to ask questions, make observations, and conduct experiments. They will develop the ability to gather and analyze data, draw conclusions, and communicate their findings.  

Elementary students will explore concepts related to living organisms, ecosystems, and the interdependence of life. Topics may include characteristics of organisms, life cycles, and biodiversity.  

Students will develop an understanding of the properties and changes of matter, energy, forces, and motion. Concepts such as states of matter, simple machines, and energy transfer may be covered.  

Elementary students will explore Earth's systems, weather patterns, and celestial bodies. Topics may include Earth's structure, weather and climate, and the solar system.  

Students will engage in the engineering design process, fostering problem-solving skills and creativity. This may involve designing solutions to real-world problems and understanding basic engineering principles.  

The standards aim to cultivate scientific literacy, critical thinking, and curiosity, laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the natural world as students progress through their education.  

Physical Education for elementary students focus on developing a holistic approach to health and well-being. Students will acquire a range of skills that contribute to their physical, social, and emotional development.

Elementary students will learn and refine fundamental motor skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching. These skills lay the foundation for various physical activities and sports.

The standards emphasize the importance of regular physical activity for overall health. Students will engage in activities that promote cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Physical education promotes social skills such as teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship. Students will participate in group activities and games, fostering collaboration and positive social interactions.

 Students will develop an understanding of personal and social responsibility in the context of physical activity. This includes safety awareness, respect for others, and adherence to rules and fair play.

 The standards incorporate movement concepts and principles, helping students understand how their bodies move in space. This includes concepts like balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.

The overall goal of the Next Generation Learning Standards for Physical Education is to promote a lifelong commitment to health and physical activity while fostering social and emotional skills through movement and play.
