English as a New Language (ENL

English as a New Language (ENL) focus on providing English language learners (ELLs) in elementary grades with comprehensive language development skills. The standards aim to support students in acquiring proficiency in English while fostering their overall academic success and cultural understanding.

ENL standards focus on developing students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. This includes building vocabulary, understanding grammar, and developing language fluency.

The standards emphasize the acquisition of academic language necessary for success in various content areas. This involves helping students understand and use language specific to different subjects.

ENL standards promote cultural competence by incorporating content that reflects diverse perspectives and experiences. This helps students not only acquire language skills but also develop an appreciation for different cultures.

Students learn to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, in various social and academic contexts. This includes participating in classroom discussions, presenting information, and writing for different purposes.

ENL standards encourage the integration of language development with content-area instruction. This means that language learning is embedded within the context of other subjects, helping students succeed across the curriculum.

Speech and Language

Learning Standards do not have specific standards labeled for Speech and Language. However, the standards do address literacy, communication, and language development, which are integral components of a student's overall education. In an elementary setting, students are generally expected to develop the following skills:

  1. Oral Communication: Students will develop oral communication skills, including clear articulation, proper pronunciation, and effective expression of ideas. This includes the ability to engage in discussions, ask questions, and convey thoughts verbally.
  2. Listening Comprehension: The standards emphasize the development of listening skills. Students are expected to comprehend spoken language, follow instructions, and understand information presented orally.
  3. Reading Skills: The ELA standards focus on literacy development, including reading comprehension and the ability to interpret and analyze written texts. Students learn to read with fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.
  4. Writing Skills: Students will develop writing skills, including the ability to express thoughts coherently, use proper grammar and syntax, and convey ideas in written form.
  5. Vocabulary Development: The standards encourage the expansion of students' vocabulary. This involves learning new words, understanding word meanings, and using varied language in both oral and written communication.

While specific standards may not be explicitly labeled for "speech and language," these foundational language skills are integrated into the broader ELA standards.
